The largest theatre in the city is located in a complex which, until the 1960s, housed the Santa Chiara city hospital. Renovated in 2006 in a contemporary style, the Auditorium offers perfect viewing and acoustics from all 800+ seats. Uto Ughi, a world-renowned violinist, showed talent from a young age, soon establishing himself as a concert performer. He has played with prestigious orchestras conducted by masters such as Giulini, Maazel and Mehta. He founded the festivals Omaggio a Venezia and Uto Ughi per Roma and in 2023 Fondazione Uto Ughi to enhance music. In 2024, he signed an agreement to integrate music into education. He plays a Guarneri del Gesù (1744) and a Stradivari Kreutzer (1701).

The stage of Teatro Sociale has been graced by the likes of Arturo Toscanini and Enrico Caruso. It has played host to Italy’s finest operas and plays, not to mention dance shows, New Year’s Eve parties and political rallies. A splendid example of Italian-style theatre, from 1819 until the 1960s, it served as the main backdrop of the city’s cultural scene. In 2000, after being purchased by the province and significant restoration works, it was returned to its former glory.
